1645 - Map of Europe by Willem Blaeu
Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571 – 21 October 1638), also known as Willem Jansz. Blaeu, was a renowned Dutch cartographer, atlas publisher, and maker. His “carte-à-figures” maps were first introduced during the early 17th century and quickly became a popular item amongst the bourgeoisie. These maps featured side illustrations and city views in the horizontal bands, and regional people dressed in their traditional clothing in the vertical bands. The upper frieze contains images of some important cities at the time, additionally, the “figures” portray couples of the local population in eye-catching attire, such as Angli, Galli, Belgii, Castiliani, Hungarii, Behemi, Venetiani, Germani, Poloni, and Graeci.
